What does it looks like to be in counseling with me? Well, you won’t find me just nodding and reflecting. My style is to provide feedback and psychoeducation so you can be informed about the process and what is needed to move forward. Therapy with me looks like what is listed below:
I use innovative approaches to counseling, sometimes talk therapy doesn’t work alone.
Collaboration with you is key to ensure you feel safe during the sessions so deeper healing can begin.
You will probably laugh, feel connected and less isolated after our sessions. I believe in providing interactional and educational therapy sessions for you. Providing you with techniques and ideas to utilize when you are home in between counseling sessions. Developing skills is a necessary part of the growth process. Although some sessions may be used to vent and gain support. Sometimes people feel worse before they feel better. Not for long though, if your open to really looking at yourself and implementing what we discuss.
Techniques we may utilize
Together we can decide what counseling techniques would work best for you. I use a variety of techniques. The one we pick depends on your unique situation.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Approaches: Our thoughts, emotions and behaviors are interconnected. Changing thoughts can change how we feel.
Mindfulness Meditation Techniques: Mindfulness increases our awareness of our internal process (thoughts, or energy) so we can come to acceptance and make changes. Mindfulness is to be aware of what is going on internally and externally to make you aware of what is driving your actions and feelings.
Art Therapy Techniques: Art can help the unconscious unfold giving you more insight into yourself. Art is a great way to express emotions as well. often times art communicates more in a piece of art than talking can describe.
Sand Therapy for children and adults, if they are open to this, is a very powerful medium that can shift your internal energy. This allows your unconscious to unfold in a safe way through creating a world in the sand.
Talk therapy: Some people prefer to talk about their issues to gain insight into what they feel or what they are dealing with.
SoulCollage®: SoulCollage® allows you to gain information by utilizing collage art as a medium for your unconscious to show itself. Processing problems through art can be empowering. Being witnessed after you have created a piece of art and analyzed can shift energy around a situation in a powerfully positive way.
Energy Techniques: Energy Freedom Technique (tapping) as well as other energy techniques can help shift energy internally to allow for you to move forward. Energy affects our body’s response to different situations. Learn more at http://www.energypsych.org/?AboutEPv2.
Family Systems Therapy: This framework suggests we are apart of a family system in which we are a part of and individuals can not be understood in isolation from the family. If necessary, Genograms (family trees) are developed throughout the treatment to gain insights about family dynamics which may contribute to the issue at hand.
Depending how the process goes we can experiment with what methods will help you resolve the situation at hand
For children, I use a mixture of the above techniques and
Child-Centered Play Therapy which allows children to choose what activities they will partake in during the session. Children communicate through play and feel safer while playing to discuss issues than talking. So, I have found this medium is best for them. www.a4pt.org/why.cfm.
Family Play Therapy includes the family in some sessions.
Filial Play Therapy teaches parents how to be play in a child-centered way with their children which helps their children heal. It also strengths the bonds between the parent and the child.
A developmental history and genogram (family tree) is developed for comprehensive assessment of the issue at hand.
I collaborate with parents throughout the treatment. Parents are apart of the team to help children resolve the issue which brought them in. At the very least parents meet with Stacey once a month without the children to discuss progress.
Collaboration with doctors, schools and other resources with your permission.
If you don’t picture yourself sitting on a couch forever, you are in the right place. Sometimes talking makes symptoms worse, leaving you with more anxiety. Of course we will talk but you will learn effective tools for you also. You will learn to reduce symptoms of anxiety, trauma or phobias by learning techniques to change your outlook. How would your relationships, career or family flourish? My goal is not to keep you in therapy, but to graduate you from therapy by giving you the tools you need to succeed with the issues you are dealing with, and give you the techniques that may arise in the future. As the old Chinese proverb says: “If you give a man a fish, he will eat tonight. If you teach a man to fish he will eat for a lifetime.” My goal is to work with you to teach the right techniques to last your lifetime.
